Sore Neck??? Consider a Chiro!

Sore Neck? Consider a Chiro!

Is your neck aching from endless browsing, scrolling and texting? Do you wake up with a stiff neck from poor sleep? Maybe you’ve been practising some bad habits lately? This Spinal Health Week (23-29 May) we are asking our patients and community to ‘Consider a Chiro’ for neck pain.

Research Shows that neck pain is a leading cause of disability in adults (reported up to 20% of adults), with many presenting for assessment (1). In the Global Burden of Disease study in 2010, neck pain ranked 4th highest in terms of disability and 21st in overall burden (2). Not Surprisingly, neck pain (cervicalgia) constituted in the top 5 back problem hospitalisations in 2017-2018 (3).

With the average Australian spending more than 5.5 hours on their phone each day (4) and 33% of us checking our phone within 5 minutes of waking up each morning (5) – means we are glued to our phones from the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to sleep!

Neck aches and pains are now a common occurrence placing a huge burden on mental health, relationships, ability to work and quality of life, and it doesn’t stop at neck pain. Neck problems are a common trigger for headaches. They can also cause jaw problems, shoulder pain, or weakness and tingling into the arms and hands.

However, living with neck pain doesn’t have to be part of everyday life. Implementing positive spinal health habits in the first place, including good posture, sleep hygiene and partaking in regular stretching and exercise regimes are important factors in preventing neck pain.

We at Laguna Bay Chiropractic are well equipped to care for neck pain whether it be a new episode of pain or a pre-existing condition.

If you want to keep your spinal health in check, we can provide you with care, including exercise programs, lifestyle advice, and assistance to help you maintain your spinal health and overall wellbeing.

This Spinal Health Week is a great time to ‘Consider a Chiro’ and make an appointment with us to take back control of your neck pain!

A Chiropractors Survival Guide to Self Isolation

A Chiropractors survival guide to self isolation

If you find yourself stuck at home or working from home due to self-isolation, it’s imperative you keep your body moving to help prevent muscle atrophy, de-conditioning, stiffness, soreness and various pain syndromes.

Here are 10 ways to help you if you are self-isolating:

1.) Ergonomic Set Up

If you are still working from home, make sure you have a great ergonomic desk setup! Doing things like:

-          Lifting your monitor to eye level can help take strain off your neck.

-          Lifting your chair slightly, so your hips sit slightly higher than your knees helps take strain off your lower back.

-          Placing a small pillow in the small of your low back, can help provide low back support.

-          Keeping your keyboard & mouse close to you can help decrease shoulder strain.

-          Try keep your shoulders square and not rounded forwards to minimise neck and shoulder strain.

-          Try keep your head in line with your trunk and not jutting forward to minimise neck strain.

*Youtube has some great free guidance on ergonomic desk setups, check it out!

2.) Netflix and other streaming services

Make sure to limit your Netflix and Tv watching each day to something reasonable and sustainable. Something like 2-3 hours should be enough. Bonus points if you can spread this out throughout the day! Make sure you have a healthy posture on the couch and try have regular breaks, which involve walking for 2 minutes for every 30 minutes of sitting.

3.) Walk Daily and getting your steps up

We should all be aiming for at least 6,000 steps a day, with an ideal target being 10,000 steps a day. Try finding a way to get this in each day if you can. If you have a dog or kids it’s a great excuse to get outside the house. Just make sure to appropriately social distance from people outside of your household. Walking can help keep your heart and lungs healthy, along with improving your mental health.

4.) Keep doing your workouts

If you were an active person or gym goer, being creative and trying to keep up with your workouts can be a great mental health boost. Try using household items as weights, such as a backpack loaded with whatever you want to add weight appropriate to you. The sky is the limit, get creative and tag your favourite gym in your workout to keep others motivated.

5.) Perfect time to work on your injuries

If you have suffered an injury and are currently following a rehabilitative plan from your Chiropractor, then now is the perfect time to really focus on that and get back to fighting fit.  Focusing on your weaknesses and building back up your body for when the virus restrictions are lifted is a great way minimise your pain and minimise future injury risk.

6.) Make time for Mobility Work

If we spend all day sitting around, we are going to start to develop stiffness and rigidity in our joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. On top of general movement like walking, it’s also a great time to focus on general stretching, foam rolling and other dedicated mobility work. Throw that yoga mat on the ground in a dedicated area, so it’s ready to go when you are!

7.) Spend time working on your property

If you’re looking for a great way to keep physically and mentally active, maybe now is a great chance to get around to those jobs you have been putting off! Been thinking of painting your house? Re-doing the garden? Doing some repairs on the fence? Now is the time to get started!

8.) Get some much needed Sleep

With less work and demands on our time, it’s possible you may be able to get to bed a bit earlier or sleep in a bit longer. Try aim for between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Good quality sleep can help us better manage stress and keep our immune system at its best. Try winding down from phones, computers etc, at least 1 hour before bed. Aim for a cool, dark environment for a great sleep.

9.) Manage your Mental Health

Now more than ever, we need to be calm and in control of our thoughts and emotions. Make sure to keep in contact with loved ones daily via a host of digital ways, from facebook, instagram, whatsapp and more. Meditation can also be a fantastic way to manage stress and keep in control; try Headspace -  a great app designed for beginners.

10.) Keep positive and find ways to have fun

Keep your spirits up by finding new ways to have fun. Try an old board game, or a game of chess. Start reading that book your wanted to get around to. Do you have a pool table, darts or a ping pong table; dust it off and have a few laughs with family to keep active.

Spinal Decompression | Chiropractor in Noosaville QLD 4566

WHAT IS SPINAL DECOMPRESSION?

Decompression uses new advanced technology in the form of intermittent traction applied to a specific spinal region. The goal, through using a gentle pumping and pulling motion, is to create a small vacuum that pulls a disc bulge back into place. Through this process the pressure on the nerve causing it to be "pinched" is relieved.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS DECOMPRESSION

Recent studies have shown that spinal decompression is 86% effective for qualifying patients. Some of our patients notice relief after just a couple of sessions and others within the first couple of weeks. Of course it can depend on how severe the disc bulge is and how long it has been there. Spinal decompression uses new advanced technology. Decompression is used to treat nerve pain coming from disc bulges or degenerative discs. Spinal decompression can relieve pain from pinched nerves.

DOES IT HURT?

The process is generally very comfortable and it's not uncommon for us to find our patients fast asleep when we check in on them. There may be some mild discomfort upon standing just as you may experience some pain when getting out of bed in the morning. Many of our patients choose to bring an Ipod with them to enjoy some relaxing music while on decompression.

IS DECOMPRESSION RIGHT FOR ME?

If you suffer from sciatica, numbness or tingling in the hands or feet, arm and hand pain, degenerative disc disease,  disc bulging, pain in the buttocks or in the back of the legs then spinal decompression is definitely something you should try before considering surgery.

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Chiropractic

10 Things Most People Don’t Know About Chiropractic

I came across this great article by Dr. Erin O'Malley. Have a look!

1. Pain is the last symptom of dysfunction.

A patient’s back is often restricted or unstable for months or years before it presents as a problem and they show up in a chiropractor’s office. In addition, the absence of pain is not health. While medication may be necessary in some cases, if you take a pill and the pain goes away, the dysfunction that caused it still persists. Muscle, ligament and joint injuries often occur as a result of long-term bio-mechanical dysfunction, sometimes from past injuries, making the area more susceptible to future injury.

2. Athletes use chiropractors to stay well and perform better, not just for the occasional injury.

Athletes choose chiropractors because we are movement specialists. Chiropractors were spotted all over the Olympic coverage last year, and top athletes such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, Tom Brady, Evander Holyfield, and Arnold Schwarzenegger have all been proud patients of chiropractors. These days it’s far more common than not for major athletes and sports teams to keep chiropractors nearby to help prevent injuries, speed injury recovery, improve balance and coordination, and give them a greater competitive edge.

3. The body does not perform as a cluster of separate mechanisms, but rather a cascade of events that all starts with proper control by the nervous system.

The nerves that travel through and control every function of your body originate at the spinal cord and their transmission may be disrupted if the joints of the surrounding spinal column are not moving properly. This disruption in biomechanical integrity combined with altered physiological function is what chiropractors call a subluxation. Below is a chart that illustrates the relationship of the spinal nerves exiting the vertebra branching off to the various organ systems. You can see why it is not uncommon for a chiropractor to treat a patient with mid-back pain who also suffers from irritable bowel system, a patient with a subluxation in the sacral region who has been unsuccessful in trying to conceive, or a patient with an upper back fixation and acid reflux.

4. Doctors don’t do the healing.

Sorry to disappoint you, but a chiropractor will never fix your back. What we are able to do is restore proper motion in the joints, which relieves tension on the nerves and muscles and allows your body to do the healing that it is inherently made to do. As chiropractors, we believe that the body is a perfect organism in its natural state, and all disease comes from a disruption in the body’s proper transmission of signals by the nerves which affects its ability to heal and to defend against disease-causing agents. We never treat disease. We assess to find which spinal levels are experiencing disfunction, and we adjust to restore proper nerve flow so the nervous system may work as efficiently and effectively as possible.

5. Chiropractic is for all ages.

Many seniors aren’t aware of the benefits of chiropractic care which can help them not only with pain relief, but also increase range of motion, balance and coordination, and decrease joint degeneration. There’s no patient too young for chiropractic either! Chiropractors check infants moments after birth for misalignments of the upper vertebrae that may occur as a result of the birth process. In addition to supporting overall health and well-being, parents also take their children to chiropractors to encourage healthy brain and nervous system development, to assist with colic, asthma, allergies, bed-wetting and sleeping problems, and to assist with behavioral disorders.

6. We know about more than your backbone!

This surprises many people who had no idea that chiropractors give advice on nutrition, fitness, ergonomics and lifestyle, screen for conditions unrelated to the musculoskeletal system and refer out to other practitioners when necessary. Chiropractors are also able to complete specialties in other areas such as pediatrics, sports rehabilitation, neurology, clinical nutrition, and addictions and compulsive disorders.

Other than particular specialties and the differences in learning to adjust and learning to prescribe medication, our training hours are not dissimilar from that of medical doctor. The following are the classroom hours for basic science requirements compiled and averaged following a review of curricula of 18 chiropractic schools and 22 medical schools.

7. Successful chiropractic patients accept responsibility.

When somebody says that they tried chiropractic and it didn’t help, I cringe and get the feeling that they really missed the boat. Of course, there are cases with complicating factors, but I have heard this from people with straightforward chiropractic problems when it is very clear what has happened. In most cases, one doesn’t acquire back pain over night, and it’s not going to go away over night. If a weak core from years of sitting at your desk is to blame for the additional stress on your joints, I would expect an adjustment to provide relief, but once the condition is no longer exacerbated, I would most definitely prescribe some exercises for you to do at home. I might also suggest we evaluate your nutrition if I suspect an inflammatory diet may be wiring you for pain. Sure, I’m always happy to adjust someone and make a living, but if you’ve been given homework and you don’t do it, don’t say chiropractic didn’t work when you’re feeling poorly again!

8. Chiropractic may help you get sick less.

Studies have indicated that adjustments consistently reduce the production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with tissue damage and pain, and may also enhance the production of immunoregulatory complexes important for healthy immune system defense. As far back as the deadly flu pandemic of 1917-1918, chiropractors noticed that their patients seemed to have fewer fatalities than among the general population and were able to publish their work in an osteopathic journal since no scholarly journals were accepting chiropractic data. The estimated death rate among patients of conventional medical care in the U.S. was estimated at 5 to 6 percent while the fatality rate among influenza cases receiving spinal adjustments was estimated at 0.25%.

9. “I heard I’ll have to go forever” is a myth.

You may want to see your chiropractor all the time once you’ve started because you didn’t realize how great it is to get adjusted, but your doctor won’t expect you to come with the same frequency forever. Generally, if you come in with pain, once you’ve been treated for your initial complaint, you’ll be scheduled for more appointments to make sure proper motion is being maintained, then it will be recommended you return occasionally to be checked just like you would go to the dentist to get checked for tartar buildup and cavities. Of course, many people still choose to see their chiropractor weekly because it keeps them feeling their best.

10. Adjustments don’t hurt.

There is no bone snapping or warrior-style pulling heads off spinal columns! The neck adjustment some chiropractors use causes anticipation for many new patients, but is actually much more gentle than they imagined, and involves a quick, direct thrust to a specific spinal joint. The sound an adjustment makes is called a cavitation and is only space being created within the joint causing gasses to be released from the joint capsule, which creates the popping or cracking noise. Chiropractic adjustments will not wear out your joints, as some imagine because they have been warned not to “crack their knuckles” for this reason in the past. Adjustments, unlike “knuckle cracking” or having your friend stomp on you while you lay on the carpet, are applied specifically to improve the motion of your joints and limit the small dysfunctions that over time can lead to arthritis. Most people after an adjustment describe the feeling as being “lighter”, having greater ease in moving the body, and being able to stand up taller.

Some benefits of chiropractic care ..... beyond pain relief!

I came across the following article and thought it was a great read about some of the additional benefits of getting chiropractic care.

Check it out!

If you haven’t visited a chiropractor before, you might be missing out. Millions of people around the world have experienced the incredible benefits of chiropractic care.

One of the best things about chiropractic care is it’s a drug-free and surgery-free path to healing naturally.

People have reported chiropractic benefits help to improve:

There are a lot of misconceptions about chiropractic practices and how chiropractors are trained. In fact, did you know many chiropractic programs also incorporate an entire year of PhD-level advanced nutrition training?

However, most of the benefits of seeing a chiropractor come from getting a chiropractic adjustment. Let’s talk about the philosophy, history and evidence-based research of chiropractic care.

What Chiropractors Believe

Chiropractors pride themselves on taking a natural, drugless approach to helping their patients reach their health goals. Essentially, the basic principle upon which the entire profession is built is that the body has the amazing, innate ability to heal itself (under the right conditions), and it is the chiropractor’s job to help create an environment to facilitate this.

Because the nervous system controls every cell and organ in your body, chiropractors focus their attention on the health of your spine being properly aligned and, if there are shifts, helping the spine come back into alignment.

History of Chiropractic Benefits Deafness

The natural healing art of chiropractic was first developed by a magnetic healer named D.D. Palmer in 1895. According to history, it all started when Harvey Lillard — a man who was deaf in one ear — went in to see Palmer for his condition hoping that he had something up his sleeve to cure the deafness.

When Palmer learned that Lillard suffered a head injury that preceded his condition, he evaluated his spine and noticed that a vertebra in the upper back seemed wildly out of alignment. According to Palmer:

“I had a case of heart trouble which was not improving. I examined the spine and found a displaced vertebra pressing against the nerves, which innervate the heart. I adjusted the vertebra and gave immediate relief — nothing ‘accidental’ or ‘crude’ about this. Then I began to reason if two diseases, so dissimilar as deafness and heart trouble, came from impingement, a pressure on nerves, were not other disease due to a similar cause? Thus the science (knowledge) and art (adjusting) of Chiropractic were formed at that time.”

Palmer coined his manual therapy technique chiropractic, which comes from the two Greek words cheiros and praktikos (meaning “with hands”). Since then, countless millions of people across the globe have benefited from this manual therapy that some sources date back to Hippocrates!

Vertebral Subluxation

At the core of the numerous chiropractic miracle stories is a concept known as “vertebral subluxation.” When chiropractors use this phrase, they refer to mechanical compression and irritation to spinal joints and nerves. In Harvey Lillard’s case, the nerves affecting his sense of hearing were compromised, and once D.D. Palmer freed his body of this “neurological insult,” his hearing was restored.

  • For someone else, it could be sciatica
  • Or gastrointestinal complaints
  • Or (fill in the blank)

When you consider how most cells and organs in your body are controlled by nerves traveling through your spinal canal, it’s mind-blowing to consider how vast the side effects can be!

Why Get Chiropractic Adjustments?

Many things can lead to a vertebral subluxation. Some of the more common causes I’ve found are:

  • A vertebra going out of place (“misalignment”) because of a slip or fall (i.e., “macrotrauma”).
  • The entire spine misaligning globally due to poor posture.
  • Joint swelling caused by damage done to the intervertebral joint.
  • An inflammatory response caused by a poor diet, lack of pure water or psychological stress.
  • Osteoporosis or degenerative changes of the spine or intervertebral discs.
  • Trigger points and tight back muscles that pull the vertebrae out of place.

Importance of Posture

The problem that we see in Western cultures is that our unnatural habit of sitting down all day does a number on our spines — not to mention our posture! We’re glued to our cell phones, iPads and laptops!

Far too many live their lives hunched over and with their necks stuck out like turtles. Doctors call this “forward head posture,” and studies prove that for every inch your head sticks out from a true center of gravity, your neck bears an extra 10 pounds of stress. Just think about how common and dangerous this can be for your health!

During posture evaluations, chiropractors regularly observe many of their patients carrying their head two to three inches forward, which is an extra 20-30 pounds of pressure on their neck!

Top 10 Chiropractic Studies and Research

Finding a good chiropractor isn’t only key to correcting the damage caused by years of poor posture or trauma — it’s also important for everyone wanting to take a proactive approach to his or her health care.

I don’t know of any other profession on the planet that can prevent neuromuscular-based disease like chiropractic can. That is why I’ve been personally getting adjusted for over 10 years and recommend my patients, friends and family members to do the same.

But don’t just take my word for it. Here is some of the medical research and studies proving the therapeutic benefits of chiropractic.

1. Sciatica

The European Spine Journal published the findings from a clinical trial last year uncovering how chiropractic adjustments resulted in a 72 percent success rate in treating sciatica and related symptoms compared to the 20 percent success from physical therapy and 50 percent from corticosteroid injections.

Compared to most medical treatments, few interventions can initiate back pain relief and healing like chiropractic adjustments can!

2. Low Back Pain and Neck Pain

In a study published in the British Medical Journal 2003, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study.

The clinical outcome measures showed that chiropractic adjustments resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the chiropractic-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care.

Another study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients.

A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.x

In a study funded by NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating neck pain, 272 participants were divided into three groups that received either spinal manipulative therapy from a doctor of chiropractic (DC), pain medication (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants) or exercise recommendations.

After 12 weeks, about 57 percent of those who met with DCs and 48 percent who exercised reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, compared to 33 percent of the people in the medication group. After one year, approximately 53 percent of the drug-free groups continued to report at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, compared to just 38 percent pain reduction among those who took medication.

3. Headaches (Tension and Migraine)

Second only to back pain, headaches are one of the most common conditions regularly managed by chiropractors. At the time I conducted this research, over 230 peer-reviewed articles referenced chiropractic’s ability to help cure, prevent and ease the burden of headaches and migraines in people all across the globe!

A group trial found that 22 percent of people who had chiropractic treatment saw the number of attacks drop by 90 percent. In that same study, 49 percent said they had a significant reduction in pain intensity.

Compared to most medical treatments, few interventions can initiate headache relief like chiropractic adjustments can.

4. Colic and Ear Infections

A 2012 study published in Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments greatly reduced colic symptoms.

Although very few randomized control trials have been conducted describing the clinical effects of chiropractic care on children, literally scores of case studies have been documented that describe how children suffering from otitis media (ear infections), acid reflux and colic have experienced complete to near complete resolution after just a few visits.

The reasons for this vary, but one common theme is that nerves controlling the gut and brain are intricately connected to each other and are quite sensitive to neurological insult caused by vertebral subluxations.

5. Neurological Conditions

Exciting research is currently being conducted via upright MRI showing how upper cervical adjustments affect various brain-based conditions. What we have seen so far is quite remarkable.

Not only are MRI scans revealing that cerebral spinal fluid and blood flow are markedly increased after a chiropractic adjustment, researchers are observing that cerebellar invagination (when the cerebellum drops down below the skull line) is being reversed and brain plaquing (common in multiple sclerosis patients) is disappearing!

Montel Williams, the famous TV host, was interviewed about his experience as a MS patient under chiropractic care. Check it out here to see how it changed his life!

6. Blood Pressure

In 2007, George Bakris, the world expert on hypertension, published a study with a team of researchers in the Human Journal of Hypertension proving that one upper cervical chiropractic adjustment had the same effect as two blood pressure-lowering drugs. Even more fascinating, the effects of just one adjustment lasted more than six months!

Compared to the placebo-treated patients, those who got the real procedure saw an average 14 mm Hg greater drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure count) and an average 8 mm Hg greater drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom blood pressure number).

Other studies have shown similar findings with hypotensive patients, and their low blood pressure was raised to normal levels after chiropractic care. This is exciting because it highlights the body’s ability to create a homeostatic balanced environment once vertebral subluxations are removed.

7. Surgery Prevention

Chiropractic has long been heralded by natural health care providers as a natural method to prevent back surgery.

In fact, the Journal of the American Medical Association just recently published its low back pain guidelines and suggested that people suffering from back pain first try chiropractic before resorting to surgery.

8. Frozen Shoulder

Last year a clinical trial was published describing how patients suffering from the debilitating condition frozen shoulder responded to chiropractic care.

Of the 50 patients: 16 resolved completely; 25 showed 75 percent to 90 percent improvement; eight showed 50 percent to 75 percent improvement; and one showed 0 percent to 50 percent improvement.

9. Scoliosis

Chiropractic adjustments for scoliosis coupled with muscular rehabilitation techniques may help prevent the progression of scoliosis. Organizations like the nonprofit Clear Institute founded by Dr. Dennis Woggon have set out to empower health care professionals with an effective chiropractic system to treat people with scoliosis.

They’ve perfected a model and discovered that it is possible to effectively treat the condition without the use of restrictive braces or dangerous surgeries. In many case studies, participants have seen a 10 percent to 30 percent decrease in their scoliosis curvatures. You can read about some of the cases here.

If you or a family member suffer from scoliosis, I strongly recommend reaching out to a certified Clear Scoliosis Center to see if they can help you!

10. Athletic Performance

There is a reason why athletes both today and in the past, like Michael Phelps, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana, are under regular chiropractic care. In fact, over 50 percent of NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff.

Because it is so effective at pain-based and pathological conditions, one of the most overlooked aspects of chiropractic care is that it enhances personal and athletic performance. Studies have sown that it:

  • Reduces inflammatory cytokines
  • Boosts your immune system
  • Enhances pulmonary function
  • Decreases mental and oxidative stress
  • Relieves muscle tension
  • And can naturally increase your energy level

Studies have even proved, objectively and subjectively, that chiropractic patients experience “overall increased bodily function,” which includes bowl regularity and mental clarity.

Basically, because it helps place your body in the position where it can heal itself, chiropractic adjustments can free your immune system up to focus on keeping you healthy, which enhances your ability to think, move and perform.

Chiropractic: More than just back pain doctors!

I'm always surprised when a patient timidly asks me if I can work on more than the spine. It seems they have this idea that Chiropractors are only back pain specialists. Nothing is farther from the truth!

Chiropractors provide mobility to all joints of the body and the benefits from Chiropractic care spread far beyond just pain relief. Chiropractic has frequently been shown to be more cost effective and have better satisfaction ratings than traditional allopathic care for joint pain. Chiropractic has also been shown to provide an increase on overall wellbeing and health by stimulating the immune system.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

The purpose of this study was to identify differences in outcomes, patient satisfaction, and related health care costs in spinal, hip, and shoulder pain patients who initiated care with medical doctors (MDs) vs those who initiated care with doctors of chiropractic (DCs) in Switzerland.

METHODS:

A retrospective double cohort design was used. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by first-contact care spinal, hip, and shoulder pain patients who, 4 months previously, contacted a Swiss telemedicine provider regarding advice about their complaint. Related health care costs were determined in a subsample of patients by reviewing the claims database of a Swiss insurance provider.

RESULTS:

The study sample included 403 patients who had seen MDs and 316 patients who had seen DCs as initial health care providers for their complaint. Differences in patient sociodemographic characteristics were found in terms of age, pain location, and mode of onset. Patients initially consulting MDs had significantly less reduction in their numerical pain rating score (difference of 0.32) and were significantly less likely to be satisfied with the care received (odds ratio = 1.79) and the outcome of care (odds ratio = 1.52). No significant differences were found for Patient's Global Impression of Change ratings. Mean costs per patient over 4 months were significantly lower in patients initially consulting DCs (difference of CHF 368; US $368).

CONCLUSION:

Spinal, hip, and shoulder pain patients had clinically similar pain relief, greater satisfaction levels, and lower overall cost if they initiated care with DCs, when compared with those who initiated care with MDs.

Have you ever wondered if you are getting enough sleep?

I know that when I don't get the right amount of sleep, I'm a cranky bear! So, what it the right amount of sleep? In the modern world there seems to be an energy shortage and I'm not talking about electricity or petrol. I'm talking about the walking zombies called people! When we aren't eating properly, are under too much stress or not getting enough sleep, we can end up in adrenal fatigue. In order to cope so we can make it through the day we have to "whip" our adrenals by drinking coffee or energy drinks.

So what do we do? A good place to start is eliminating stressors, cutting out sugary and acidic foods and of course, get enough good, high quality sleep.

According to one study, adults who say they sleep between seven and eight hours per night miss fewer work days due to sickness than others, according to a Finnish study.

What do you think?

Your Kids Need A Chiropractor!

As a father of four, I'm blessed to have been able to provide chiropractic care to my children as they have grown. Imaging how many slips and falls, trips and bloody lips they've had over the years. Kids can't always express how they feel so problems can go on undetected for years.

Luckily, here at Laguna Bay Chiropractic, we care for children with a very gentle, computer assisted adjustment that is extremely safe and works wonders.

Call us today if you have a child you'd like to set up for an exam!
