Pinched nerve vs. nerve irritation
The term "pinched nerve" is somewhat of a catch-all phrase that is commonly used to describe the pain associated with a variety of conditions from subluxations, to tunnel syndromes to the referred pain from trigger points. Most of the time, what is called a pinched nerve is actually an irritated, or inflamed nerve where the nerve itself is not actually pinched. In most cases, nerves become irritated and inflamed when the bones, joints or muscles of the spine are not in their proper position, or are not moving properly. This condition is called a "subluxation", the treatment of which is the specialty of the doctor of chiropractic.
There are instances when nerves do become 'pinched', such as in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Sciatica and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. In each of these cases, injury, spasm or inflammation of the surrounding muscles and connective tissue causes the nerve to become compressed, resulting in pain. These conditions are referred to as "tunnel syndromes." Treating tunnel syndromes is more complex than treating a simple spinal subluxation, but they usually respond very well to chiropractic care; especially when combined with other physical therapies, such as exercises and stretches.
Treating a pinched nerve.
Chiropractic care of true nerve impingement syndrome starts with effective and competent diagnosis by a chiropractor specialized in caring for radiating pain. Assessing radiating pain for impingement syndrome is complicated because there are so many possible causes of the "pinch", requiring good diagnostic skills and history taking from the examiner. Some signs of a pinched nerve can range from sharp radiating pain to numbness and tingling and lastly weakness or paralysis. If you are currently experiencing any numbness, tingling, pain that radiates down the leg or arm, weakness in grip strength or lack of the ability to walk on your heels or toes, it is extremely important that you call NOW for an evaluation. The longer a nerve is pinched, the less likely you may be to fully regain the use of whatever the nerve controls.
A bulge of an intervertebral disc is a common cause of true nerve impingement. Bulging of the intervertebral discs is one of the most common sources of debilitating and radiating shoulder, arm and finger pain or numbness as well as sciatica. Injuries to the discs of the neck or back typically occur due to whiplash style traumas like car accidents or trips and falls as well as lifting injuries. Neck and back disc injuries also occur due to improper lifting such as bending and twisting while lifting, improper posture such as spending too much time on a cell phone or tablet, computer, reading a book in bed or sitting for hours at a desk. Disc injuries are one of the most common reasons that patients will have neck or back surgery. Unfortunately, once a disc is injured it can take some time to heal. Disc injuries can heal, they just do so more slowly than a subluxation or sprain strain. If you are suffering from a disc bulge or have radiating pain into the legs, feet, shoulders, arms, hands or fingers, you should see Dr. Davis first. Dr. Davis is a disc injury specialist and has the equipment and experience necessary to treat neck and back pain due to disc bulges.
